Emergency Electrician

What Counts as an Electrical Emergency

Not every electrical problem is an emergency, but some faults genuinely are. Knowing the difference helps you respond safely and get the right help quickly.

Situations that require urgent attention include: a full power outage to your home or specific circuits with no obvious cause; sparking or arcing from outlets, switches, or your switchboard; a burning smell coming from wiring or electrical fittings; a safety switch that keeps tripping and won't stay reset; exposed or damaged wiring from storm, accidental, or rodent damage; and water near live electrical components from flooding or burst pipes.

If you're facing any of these, don't wait. During business hours, call us directly for priority response. Outside hours, some of these situations require 000 — we'll explain that below.

How We Handle Urgent Electrical Work

We operate Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm. During those hours, urgent calls are prioritised and we aim for same-day response across Melbourne's western suburbs. If you call in the morning with a genuine emergency, we'll do everything we can to get to you that day.

We don't offer after-hours or weekend callouts. We've made that choice deliberately — it lets us do quality work with proper equipment and a clear head, rather than rushing to jobs in the dark. We'd rather be honest about that upfront than promise something we can't reliably deliver.

For genuine out-of-hours emergencies — active sparking, smell of burning, or flooding near electrical systems — the right call is 000 or your electricity distributor's 24-hour fault line (United Energy: 13 22 09, Citipower/Powercor: 13 24 12, AusNet: 13 17 99).

Common Emergency Scenarios We Handle

Safety switch won't stop tripping. This usually means there's a fault on the circuit — a failing appliance, damaged wiring, or moisture in a fitting. We diagnose the cause and fix it, rather than just resetting the switch and hoping for the best.

Complete power loss. Before calling, check your switchboard and your neighbours — it may be a network outage. If the fault is internal, we'll isolate whether it's the main fuse, a damaged circuit, or something in the switchboard itself.

Storm damage to electrical systems. Fallen branches, lightning surges, and water ingress can all damage wiring and switchboards. We make the system safe first, then assess what's needed for a full repair.

Switchboard failures. A switchboard that's sparking, burning, or physically damaged needs to be isolated and replaced. We carry out emergency switchboard repairs and replacements, coordinating the required inspection through Energy Safe Victoria.

Faulty wiring causing sparks or burning smell. This is a fire risk and needs to be treated as urgent. We isolate the affected circuit, identify the fault, and repair or replace the damaged wiring in compliance with AS/NZS 3000.

What to Do Before the Electrician Arrives

While you're waiting, there are a few practical steps that keep you safe and may help us work faster when we arrive.

If there's sparking, a burning smell, or any sign of fire — call 000 first, then get everyone out. Don't re-enter the building until you've been told it's safe.

If the situation isn't immediately dangerous, switch off the main breaker at the switchboard to isolate power. Don't touch anything that's wet, sparking, or visibly damaged. Keep children and pets away from the switchboard and affected areas.

Make a note of what happened — what you heard, smelled, or saw, and when — as this helps with diagnosis when we get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can you respond to an electrical emergency?
During business hours (Mon–Fri 7am–6pm), we prioritise urgent calls and aim for same-day response across Melbourne's western suburbs. Response time depends on current workload and your location. For life-threatening emergencies outside business hours — like active sparking, fire, or flooding near electrics — call 000 immediately.
What should I do if my safety switch keeps tripping?
Start by unplugging all appliances on the affected circuit and try resetting the safety switch. If it holds, plug appliances back in one at a time to find the faulty one. If the switch trips with everything unplugged, the fault is likely in the wiring itself and needs a licensed electrician to diagnose. Don't keep resetting a tripping safety switch without finding the cause.
Do you offer 24/7 emergency electrical services?
No — we operate during business hours, Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm. Within those hours, we offer priority same-day response for urgent electrical issues. If you have a genuine emergency outside business hours (smell of burning, active sparking, or flooding near electrical systems), call 000 or your electricity distributor's 24-hour fault line.
